Join a new online dating web site (tindr, grindr, christiansingles, jdate, farmersonly.com, etc). Make a profile -- you don’t have to use your real name/photo -- and look at least 20 others. Be conscious of what affordances of the site cause you to pay attention or ignore. Why do you think someone uses this site vs. another? Do you think their expectations match how the site is used? Goffman describes impression given and impression given off. On this site, are the impressions given and impressions given off the same?Note: if you (or if your significant other) do not feel comfortable creating a dating profile, you can perform the same analysis on LinkedIn or another site where people manage their professional identify.
