What is it like to be a total newbie to a community? Sign up for a social web service that you do not currently use (e.g., Reddit, Stackoverflow, Instagram, 7cups, 8chan, etc). Use it for at least three days, and try to make contributions within the community. Write a short paragraph or two at most to reflect on the newcomer experience. What does it mean to “gain traction” in this community? Did anything prevent you from becoming an active community member? How does the site communicate to new members about their role within the community? Do any existing community members do anything to help newcomers?
